OFFICIAL OBITUARY

09/30/19

Jessye Norman

Born: September 15, 1945
Augusta, Georgia

African American opera singer
Jessye Norman is an African American opera singer. Her rich soprano voice covers an uncommonly wide range, from classical to modern compositions.

Early years

Jessye Norman was born on September 15, 1945, in Augusta, Georgia. Her father, Silas, was an insurance broker and her mother, Janie, was a schoolteacher. There were four other children in the family. Music was very important in the family, and all the children took piano lessons at a young age. Her parents encouraged Jessye musically, and she began singing in church choirs at the age of four.
Norman's first step toward a singing career, taken at the suggestion of her high school chorus teacher, was to enter the Marion Anderson vocal competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at age sixteen. She did not win the competition, but her singing did gain her a full scholarship to Howard University in Washington, D.C. Norman fell in love with opera the first time she heard a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast. "I was nine and didn't know what was going on, but I just loved it," she told Charles Michner of Vanity Fair magazine.

Debuts

Norman, to finance her graduate studies, entered the 1968 International Music Competition of the German Broadcasting Corporation in Munich, Germany, and took first prize. This famous award gave her immediate wide recognition and engagements throughout Germany leading to a December 1969 debut with the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Germany. Norman had always been selective about her repertoire (a list of operas prepared for performance). She followed her own instincts and interests more than the advice of her teachers or requests of her management. This tendency put her at odds with the Deutsche Oper and forced her to seek out musical works on her own that she felt were more suitable to her vocal skills.
Norman's search took her to Italy, where she sang in Florence in the spring of 1970. In April of 1972 she made her debut at Milan's famous opera house, La Scala, in the title role of Verdi's Aida. Her first well-publicized American performance took place that summer in a concert performance of the same role at the Hollywood Bowl. Later in 1972 Norman further established herself in the United States with an all-Wagner concert at the Tanglewood Festival in Lennox, Massachusetts, and a recital tour of the country. That September she made her London, England, debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Travels

During the years from 1973 to 1975 Norman performed throughout the Western world—in Spain, Holland, Germany, Scotland, Italy, England, France, and Argentina, as well as the United States—and often performed works outside the standard repertoire.
In 1975 Norman moved to London and had no staged opera appearances for the next five years. While her reason for the withdrawal was that she needed to fully develop her voice, others felt that this was a period of concern for her weight and thus her stage image. She told John Gruen of the New York Times, "As for my voice, it cannot be categorized. I like so many different kinds of music that I've never allowed myself the limitations of one particular range."
In October of 1980 Norman returned to the operatic stage in the title role of Richard Strauss's (1864–1949) Ariadne auf Naxos at the Hamburger Staatsoper in Hamburg, Germany. In 1982 she appeared in her American stage debut with the Philadelphia Opera as Dido in Henry Purcell's (1659–1695) Dido and Aeneas and as Jocasta in Igor Stravinsky's (1882–1971) Oedipus Rex. Her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera took place in September of 1983. She sang at the January 21, 1985, inauguration of President Ronald Reagan (1911–), an invitation that she debated as an African American, as a Democrat, and as a nuclear disarmament activist. But she did accept and sang the folk song "Simple Gifts."
Although Norman was concerned about her stage image, she often managed to convert

her large size to a positive advantage by choosing roles that called for stately and dignified bearing.

Honors and recent work

Among the numerous honors bestowed upon Norman were: Musical America 's musician of the year, 1982; honorary doctorates from Howard University (1982), Boston Conservatory of Music (1984), University of the South (1984), and Harvard University (1998). She was given the honor of being named Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, 1984. She also received awards for many of her recordings.
Norman's work in the 1990s included singing at the opening of the Metropolitan Opera's production of Ariadne auf Naxos in 1993, taking part at a gala for the New York Philharmonic in 1995, and appearing at concerts throughout the world.
In March 1997, Jessye Norman was honored by New York City's Associated Black Charities at the eleventh annual Black History Makers Awards Dinner for her contributions to the arts and to African American culture. Norman made her first appearance in Russia in 2001. She sang at the "Tribute in Light" memorial ceremony in New York City to honor those people who died in the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

GOOLSBY, MELVIN C. Was born in Rayle, GA in Wilkes County on June 4, 1918. He was also affectionately known as 'Bo' to some of his relatives. He was brought to Grand Rapids, MI by his parents, Emmett and Lola Goolsby in 1923. He attended South High School and was the first African American baseball player to earn a Varsity letter for the sport. Not only did he excel at sports, but he was very often on the honor roll through high school. His love for knowledge never waned. His fascination with reading the paper led him to become a 'paperboy' in Grand Rapids, MI. His normal daily regimen consisted of his reading two newspapers per day and countless books. He often spent so much money on books, that his wife made him join the "Book of the Month Club" to save money. After reading, "Roots" by Alex Haley, he purchased a tape recorder and went South to reacquaint himself with the relatives he had lost touch with. He recorded hours of conversations and began to piece together the history of his family. He was also an avid researcher and contributor to The Allen Family Reunion (his wife's family), as well as documenting several Centennial Farms in Michigan. He has received many awards and honors for his contributions, one of which was the Albert Baxter Award, which he received from the Grand Rapids Historical Society, "for an outstanding contribution to the study, interpretation and preservation of the history of the Grand River Valley." He also had many articles published in the Grand Rapids Press outlining the national as well as local historical events. He was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Army, spending a good deal of time in Europe. He also worked at the US Post Office in Grand Rapids, MI and was the first African-American supervisor ever to work there before retiring in 1978. He loved Jazz and had the pleasure of meeting jazz greats Billie Holiday and Django Reinhardt in person. He received autographed photographs from both. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Opal (Allen) Goolsby. He is survived by his son, David Goolsby (Beverly); ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He will be missed by many. The viewing will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with services at Noon at Christ's Kingdom Ministries, 501 S. Melvin C. Goolsby, 95, a passionate researcher of family and community history, has died.
He was born in Georgia in 1918 and moved with his parents to Grand Rapids in 1923. At South High School, he was the first African-American student to earn a varsity letter in baseball.

After reading “Roots” by Alex Haley, he bought a tape recorder and went south to reacquaint himself with his relatives. He recorded hours of conversations and began to piece together the history of his family.
In a 2003 Grand Rapids Press article, he said he was driven to learn the history of his country.
"That's my passion,” he said. “I know what went on in the various segments of this country and why and who the big players were, especially black folks. They didn't teach that stuff in school."
Goolsby advised anyone interested in family history to begin by talking to the oldest relative.
"When a person dies,” he said, "a library burns."
Goolsby also researched his wife’s family history and documented several centennial farms in Michigan.
He received many awards and honors for his contributions, including the Albert Baxter Award from the Grand Rapids Historical Society "for an outstanding contribution to the study, interpretation and preservation of the history of the Grand River Valley."
And he had many articles published in The Press about national and local historical events.

Relation: Wilkes County
Geraldine “Gerrie” Barwick, daughter of the late William Charles Barwick and Fannie Louella Jackson Barwick was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 6, 1941. She departed this life peacefully on August 5, 2013.
As a teen Gerrie worked in her family’s neighborhood appliance store. She attended Cincinnati Public Schools and after completing her final years at St. Mary’s High School in Hyde Park, continued on to positions with the Cincinnati and Michigan Bell Telephone Companies. Gerrie also enjoyed a role as WCIN radio station’s midday on-air personality “Cindy Hamilton”, where Butternut Bread was her sponsor.
Gerrie loved the Lord and the Gospel, and spent her lifetime ministering to the spiritual needs of others. After accepting Christ as a young woman, in 1974 Gerrie joined Zion Temple First Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Elder Jasper Phillips where she was baptized and filled with the “Holy Spirit”. Gerrie continued her work in the ministry at Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Anderson Culbreath until her relocation to Atlanta, Georgia in the late 1980′s. At the time of her “Homegoing”, Gerrie remained a member of Antioch A.M.E. Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where the Reverend Stafford J. Wicker presides as Pastor.
Inheriting her Father’s gift for sales and entrepreneurial spirit, Gerrie established Atlanta’s Harvester Pine Straw Company. As a successful landscape-supply wholesaler, Gerrie traveled throughout the Southeast Region for several years building her reputation and expanding her customer-base.
Fiercely loyal and devoted to family, Gerrie never hesitated to offer support and care to those she loved. In 1990 when Gerrie’s Mother was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, she committed herself to Fannie’s care, bringing Fannie home to Georgia until her passing in March of 1992.
Meticulously dressed, smelling divine and smiling, Gerrie always placed the needs of her children, grandchildren and family above her own! Blessed with the gift of unshakable faith, she overcame any life challenge that attempted to block her path.
Our Gerrie lived an abundant and exceptional life! We send her home to the welcoming arms of God and all those who loved her first. At last, there is rest for the weary!

Cousin Sandra Taliaferro Relation: grand niece of wife of nephew of husband of sister of 1st great grand aunt   & DNA
Such a sweet spirit!
On Tuesday, February 12, 2013, God picked a beautiful flower to take home to heaven with Him. This beautiful flower was Sandra Jean Taliaferro. Waiting at the door were her ancestors – the ones she knew personally, the ones whose names she called during her years of genealogy research, and also the ones whom she longed to find. Sandra is with all of them now. She is overjoyed. Sandra was a member of AAHGS Metro Atlanta chapter for over five years. She was born and raised in Atlanta and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Life, with a concentration in Criminal Justice, from Georgia State University in 1979. She was employed as a Paralegal with the Office of the General Counsel for over 30 years. Sandra began researching her family history in 2001. Her ancestral journey included a number of counties in Georgia, including Henry, DeKalb, Clayton, Greene, Morgan, Newton, Meriwether, Pike, Harris, and Putnam counties. Her maternal surnames of interest were Gates, Middlebrooks, Thompson, Parks/Park and Guise. Her paternal surnames were Taliaferro, Toliver, Dorsey, Jackson, Gilbert, Butler, Askew, Brewer, Lawrence, Reid/Reed, Turner, and Little. Sandra researched feverishly and passionately for her ancestors. She was very active in the online genealogy community where she wrote about her family history research and other genealogy-related musings on her blog entitled “I Never Knew My Father” (http://ineverknewmyfather.com). In 2003, Sandra began researching her paternal line; her desire to uncover her paternal roots was sparked by the fact that she never knew her father. Equipped with only a few facts and clues provided by her mother, Sandra began her search, although the possibility of tracing her paternal ancestry was never an avenue she thought she'd pursue with much success. Nonetheless, her research was very successful beyond her imagination. After finding her father, John Lawrence Taliaferro, with his parents and siblings in the 1930 census, Sandra was able to trace her paternal line back to her great-great-grandfather, Miles Taliaferro. She located him in the 1870 census, a genealogical feat. Sandra also found Miles and his son John (her great-grandfather) on an 1856 slave inventory and appraisement for their former Taliaferro enslaver in Fulton County, Georgia. However, Sandra’s most significant and surprising research find was indeed a life-changing one. Through the message boards on Ancestry.com, she discovered and connected with the family of the father she never knew. She met four first cousins, an aunt (her father’s sister), and a brother. She and her brother Bernard officially met in July 2005, and Sandra’s research story was featured in the February 19, 2007 issue of Jet magazine. See that magazine article here: http://tinyurl.com/a9wt82y Upon meeting her brother Bernard, they instantly bonded; he moved back to Atlanta in 2006 and became her devoted care-giver. He was right there by her side for the remainder of her beautiful life. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Sandra. Enjoy this eternal time now with those ancestors you loved so dearly! published first here:http://aahgsatl.blogspot.com/2013/02/a-tribute-to-sandra-taliaferro.html Sandra's Blog: http://ineverknewmyfather.blogspot.com/

Frank L. Mattox Jr.
(1962-2012)
Relation: Distant Maternal cousin
USA
Frank Mattox, who starred at Acalanes High and Cal, then spent his professional career in baseball, mostly with the Seattle Mariners. He spent 17 years in the Mariners' organization, including six as scouting director, played at Cal in the early 1980s for coach Bob Milano. He was a second baseman on an infield that included Brian Guinn (whose son B.J. is a Padres minor leaguer) and big leaguer Lance Blankenship. Frank returned to Berkeley for Cal's Hall of Fame banquet to celebrate the induction of former Bear and current Cincinnati Reds pitching coach Bryan Price. After leaving Cal, Mattox played seven seasons in the Brewers farm system, finishing his career in 1990 playing for Triple-A Denver. He then went on to work for Denver and then became a scout for the expansion Colorado Rockies. He joined the Mariners organization in 1995 as a West Coast crosschecker. Mattox became scouting director in September 1997, running six drafts for the organization while working for vice president of scouting and player development Roger Jongewaard, who is now a pro scout for the Marlins. “I scouted him and I hired him," Jongewaard said. "Frank's just a good guy and a good scout who had a good idea about players”. Left-hander Matt Thornton, now with the White Sox, was the first of Mattox's draft picks, in '98, and Seattle took Adam Jones with their top pick in the last draft he ran, in 2003. In between, he oversaw drafts that produced big leaguers such as Willie Bloomquist, J.J. Putz, Bryan LaHair and Eric O'Flaherty. Mattox also was featured in a Microsoft commercial in 1997, showing him working on a laptop computer with Microsoft software. "The best thing about the commercial," Mattox told BA's Alan Schwarz at the time, "is the recognition it gives to scouts and the profession itself. Some of us played, some didn't, but we're all trying to be ambassadors of the game."
