James “Junior” Drinkard III

Mr. James “Junior” Drinkard III was born on July 18, 1951, in Washington, Georgia, to the late Louise and James Drinkard. He gained his heavenly wings on Saturday, January 9, 2021, in his home, with his loving wife, Jimmie, by his side.

James began working at an early age. He grew up on a farm with his parents and siblings. He was taught how to care for the farm as soon as he was able to walk. This instilled integrity, passion, and hard work in him from a very early age. James grew up to attend what is now known as Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School. He was a well-rounded student athlete, excelling in basketball and becoming a member of the junior varsity and varsity teams. James accepted the Lord as his Savior at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ninety-Six, South Carolina. He was an active member of the church and a faithful servant.

James Drinkard III answered the call after hearing the silent whisper, “Well done, thou good, devoted, and faithful servant.” He was definitely one of a kind, strong with a smile that was infectious and bright. A silent soldier, but you always knew he was there because he had a great presence that could win even the strongest over. James Drinkard III was a legend in his own right.

James exhibited much grit, tenacity, and a tireless work ethic. He worked many laborious jobs, including working on the railroad in his hometown. James later retired from Burt Lumber Company after dedicating over 30 years of service to the company.

James met his wife, Jimmie, in Washington, Georgia. Jimmie came from a small town in South Carolina very similar to Washington. They had a wonderful relationship, with Jimmie becoming his best friend and the love of his life. Two amazing young men, Sheldon (also known as Ty) and Jesse, were born out of this beautiful union to join their older brother, Joey. Together James and Jimmie raised their three boys to become young men.

James is preceded in death by his brother, Edward Drinkard; brother in-law, Prater Nicholson; and grandson Joey Drinkard Jr.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Jimmie Nicholson-Drinkard; three sons, Joey (Toya) of Athens, Georgia, Sheldon “Ty” (Dwan) of Hampton, Georgia, and Jesse of Washington; two brothers, Lamar (Earline) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Richard of Augusta, Georgia; two sisters, Irene (Clemmons) Williams and Rosa (Willie “Pete”) Sims of Decatur, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Haisezetter Nicholson of Portsmouth, Virginia; four granddaughters, Charity, Jaylah, Jordyn, and Madisyn; along with a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives, and friends.

McLendon Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
