maternal 1st cousin of wife of 2nd cousin 2x removed 1911 - 2019 Mother Rosa Nell Howard, 108 of Athens, a native of Wilkes County, began her eternal journey Wednesday, November 13, 2019. Mother Howard was Athens-Clarke County's oldest residence. She is survived by her granddaughter, Andrea (Keith) Wilson; great-granddaughter Gabrielle; special friends and family members who would visit her regularly, many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held 12 Noon, Monday, November, 18, 2019 at Springfield Baptist Church Athens. Interment will be at East Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The viewing will be held 1-7PM, Sunday at the funeral home. Professional services entrusted to Winfrey Mutual Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barbara Ann "Barb" Phinizy, 81, of Augusta, Georgia entered into rest Sunday, October 22, 2017 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 27, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. from Harmony Baptist Church, 930 Hopkins Street, Augusta, Georgia, with Reverend Dr. Woodrow Miller, Jr., pastor-officiating, Reverend Antonio  Smith , presiding. Interment will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens, 3666 Deans Bridge Road, Hephzibah, Georgia. The remains will lie in state at the church from 12:00 noon until the hour of service. She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Wanda Renee (Jerome, Sr.) Mitchell; one son, Carl Wesley (Gloria) Phinizy; grandchildren, Jerome (Shanta) Mitchell, II, Jawandalyn Mitchell, Karrah Phinizy and Cardia Phinizy; two sisters, Frankalene (Abram) Dunn and Betty Jean Harris; one brother, James (Bertha) Hill; and a host of family and friends. Her rich  soprano  voice covers an uncommonly wide range, from classical to modern compositions. Early years Jessye Norman was born on September 15, 1945, in Augusta, Georgia. Her father, Silas, was an  insurance  broker and her mother, Janie, was a schoolteacher. There were four other children in the family. Music was very important in the family, and all the children took piano lessons at a young age. Her parents encouraged Jessye musically, and she began singing in church choirs at the age of four. Norman's first step toward a singing career, taken at the suggestion of her high school chorus teacher, was to enter the Marion Anderson vocal competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at age sixteen. About Washington On January 23, 1780, in the midst of the hard and bitter fighting of the Revolution, the Executive Council ordered the town laid out in Wilkes County, Georgia. The council specified that it was to be called Washington, making this the first town in the United States named for George Washington. The town was confirmed by the Commander-in-Chief of the American armies, as the first city chartered in his name, on his visit to Georgia in 1791.  Washington, Georgia, is located in Wilkes County, 100 miles east of Atlanta, between Athens and Augusta.   As of the census of 2000, there were 4,295 people, 1,778 households, and 1,162 families residing in the city. The population density was 547.5 people per square mile. Harriet Powers (1837-1910) Maternal Relation Original entry by Ashley Callahan , Georgia Museum of Art,  04/06/2005 Last edited by NGE Staff on 10/01/2018 Harriet Powers is one of the best-known southern African American  quilt makers , even though only two of her quilts, both of which she made after the  Civil War  (1861-65), survive today. One is part of the National Museum of American History collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The second quilt is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. The  cotton  quilts consist of numerous pictorial squares depicting biblical scenes and celestial phenomena. They were constructed through applique and piecework and were hand and machine stitched. Powers was born into  slavery  near  Athens  on October 29, 1837, and lived more than half her life in  Clarke County , mainly in Sandy Creek and Buck Branch. The first of t...
