Reese Jack Booker: An Educator, A Hero

Image
Reese J. Booker Wilkes Relative Distinguished African American educator and community leader, Reese Jack Booker was born in 1911 in the Pinto District of Wilkes County Georgia. The 1930 Census reflects that his 45-year-old mother, Sallie Lou Booker, was the head of the household and was parenting three children - 12-year-old son Reese, 14-year-old daughter Clara, and 10-year-old son O. D. The census records that Sallie was a farmer and that each child was a farm laborer. Gibson Grove Baptist Church was the family church and was significant in the spiritual development of all the Booker children. After completing high school in Washington, Georgia, Reese enlisted in the Navy where he served honorably as a cook for several years. Having been positively influenced in Wilkes County by the local Black Presbyterian minister and educator Rev. William Woods, Reese, upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, used his hard-earned GI Bill educational benefits to prepare himself for a ...

Mary McDonald 1770-1906

Image
Story copied from: Philadelphia Stories by Bob Mcnulty   Note: I have found no evidence to Mrs. McDonald or Mr. Gibson. Mary McDonald was born on November 14, 1770 in Frogtown (near Norristown). When Mary was 4 years old, her mother died. She was then sent to live with the family of Rees Howell as a bound servant. Howell had a farm situated on the road betwe ... en Gulph Mills and Valley Forge. In mid December, 1777, (about a month after her 7th birthday) Mary watched as Washington's ragged Continental Army passed in front of the Howell's house on their way to nearby Valley Forge where they would make camp for the next several months. It was snowing fiercely on January 1, 1778. The Howell family was about to sit down to a New Years Day feast when their neighbor, Isaac Walker arrived outside their door on a huge sleigh. Walker told them that the soldiers at Valley Forge were starving and he had been out collecting food for them all day. The Howells...

Wingfield forever linked to higher education pursuit

Clinton Wingfield finished high school in 2001 at age 77. At 81 years old he was getting ready to enroll at Georgia Perimeter College to study computers, but it wasn't to be. On July 5, a month before class began at the Decatur Campus on Panthersville Road, Wingfield, who lived in Decatur with Eutha, his wife of 27 years, died at DeKalb Medical Center. His wife said he was really excited about going to GPC. "He just wanted to do that," she said. "He told me that when he learned how to use computers he was going to teach me. But he didn't want me to tell anyone that he was going to college. He wanted to surprise them when he graduated." During the application process, Wingfield, a retired General Motors lineman, made such an impression on the admissions team, the college wanted to commemorate his efforts. On Sept. 13, they invited his widow to the college and presented her with a framed copy of his acceptance letter. Decatur Campus Provost Felita Williams sa...
